Recognising Best Practice in Sustainable School Travel
What is Modeshift STARS?
Modeshift STARS is the national schools awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel. The scheme encourages schools across the country to join in a major effort to increase levels of sustainable and active travel in order to improve the health and well-being of children and young people. Every school in England (outside of London) can participate in Modeshift STARS for free. On completion of an application for Modeshift STARS, schools will automatically have a brand new national standard School Travel Plan.

Create a Travel Plan
Create a Travel Plan with Modeshift STARS by using the online platform. The Modeshift STARS portal is designed to capture the key elements of a travel plan, the system guides you through the process and creates a plan for your school site. Modeshift STARS allows you to log and record activities in the system to work towards STARS Accreditation. Ask pupils and staff how they travel to school and log it in the online system.
Log and record activities that are designed to promote walking, cycling and other forms of sustainable school travel. Modeshift STARS has over 100 initiatives that are recognised for the promotion of sustainable travel. Record your school's progress in the STARS system by conducting hands up surveys with pupils and staff asking them how they travelled to school. By delivering a range of activities in school you can work towards Modeshift STARS Gold, Silver and Bronze STARS Accreditation.
Regional and National Awards
By working through the Modeshift STARS System and gaining accreditation schools are eligible to be nominated for the Regional and National School Travel Awards. The National School Travel Awards recognise best practice in the promotion of walking, cycling and other forms of sustainable travel to and from school.
